Need A Girl: A Feminine Homesickness

An excerpt from an interview with Jenna Desmond—the lead singer of the Charleston-based band Babe Club—about their recent single. This piece was written for an independent magazine publication.

Babe Club’s recent single and music video, Need a Girl is cute and familiar. Lead singer Jenna Desmond’s search for sisterhood is the result of a therapeutic depravity, expressed in her lyrics like, “If I’m not crazy when I return will you be there?” Written in 2017, Desmond reflected that the song was influenced by Bully, Heyrocco, and HAIM, artists the band was immersed in at the time it was created. Jenna was touring with Charleston band Susto when she wrote Need a Girl:

Jenna: I was writing and was like “I don’t know what to write about, like, I’m dating somebody who is really cool, and I’m in this cool band, I feel like pretty happy.” So, I was reading this Leonard Cohen poem book—trying to get inspired—called the Book of Longing. And at the time I was like, “What do I feel like I don’t have?” And for me it was a girl friend. And just missing that intimacy you have with your friends who you can be really honest with about, you know, what’s going on in your life and who you are.

After touring, Jenna and Corey (guitar) began multiple attempts at a music video for “Need a Girl”. During the process of making the second music video was when two first began collaborating with Meg (keys).

Jenna: It’s really cool cause I think Meg was kind of, [Meg I feel like I’m confessing my love to you] somebody who, like she has an energy that me and Corey just appreciate being around. Like she just has a core artistic expression, and at the same time, she just listens and understands. I think that is the quality in a friend and somebody I was looking to collaborate with at the time when I wrote Need A Girl.

JD: So, meg was the girl you needed?

Jenna: I think so!

Currently, Babe Club is excited. As they look forward to refining their video content, they also will continue sharing more singles from their catalog. Their debut EP, Remember This Feeling, is set to be released in October and will include a collection of 5 songs, including upcoming singles Together and Road to Nowhere
